The best joint savings account UK couples can open in an app-first bank comes from one of three providers: Starling, Revolut or Monzo. Each one bolts a joint savings product onto its joint current account, so you need that first. Which is best depends on two things: how much you are saving, and whether either of you already pays for a monthly plan.

Short answer, on rates checked on each provider’s own page on 13 October 2026:

  • Starling Joint Easy Saver pays the most with no subscription: 4.00% AER variable on up to £25,000, but 1.50% of that is a bonus that lasts six months. After that it drops to 2.50% AER.
  • Revolut Joint Instant Access Savings pays 2.9% AER on its free Standard plan and up to 4% AER on Ultra, with no time limit on the rate. The catch is that the lower of your two plans sets the rate.
  • Monzo Joint Instant Access Savings Pots pay from 2.75% AER, rising to 3.50% AER only when you both pay for a Monzo plan.

All three rates are variable and can change.

Starling: the best rate if neither of you pays a subscription

Starling’s Joint Easy Saver is the simplest product of the three. From 11am on 1 October 2026, new joint Easy Saver applications get 4.00% AER (3.92% gross) variable on balances up to £25,000. That figure includes a fixed bonus of 1.50% AER for the first six months. Above £25,000, and on everything once the six months are up, the rate is the 2.50% AER (2.46% gross) underlying rate.

The headline 5.00% AER you may see on Starling’s site is for personal Easy Savers opened within 30 days of a brand-new personal current account. It is not offered on the joint version.

Practical points:

  • Money goes in from, and comes back out to, your Starling joint account. There is no notice period and no penalty for withdrawals.
  • Each customer can hold one personal Easy Saver and one joint Easy Saver, so you cannot open a second joint one to reset the bonus.
  • Starling’s “Spaces” inside the joint current account are for setting money aside; they are not the Easy Saver, so check which one you are moving money into.

The bonus is the whole story here. On £10,000 kept in for a year, roughly half the year earns 4.00% and half earns 2.50%, which works out at around 3.25% for the year as a whole: competitive, but not the 4.00% the headline suggests. Our page on what happens when a savings app bonus rate ends covers how to plan for the drop.

Revolut: the best rate if you already pay for a plan

Revolut’s Joint Instant Access Savings account is run with ClearBank, which holds the deposits and pays the interest. Rates by plan, from Revolut’s summary box:

Plan Joint savings rate
Standard (free) 2.9% AER variable
Plus 2.9% AER variable
Premium 3.25% AER variable
Metal 3.4% AER variable
Ultra 4% AER variable

The rule that matters: interest is paid at the rate of the lowest active plan held by either of you. Revolut’s own example is one holder on Standard and the other on Metal; the account earns the Standard rate. So the 4% only applies if you both pay for Ultra, which is Revolut’s most expensive plan. Before upgrading for a better savings rate, do the maths against the plan fee: on £5,000, the gap between 2.9% and 4% is about £55 a year before tax, less than most paid plans cost. Our Revolut savings review covers the personal savings side.

Interest is calculated daily on the end-of-day balance and paid the next day, gross. Revolut gives at least 14 days’ notice of a rate cut, but no notice if the rate changes because one of you switches plan. Money can only move in and out through your Revolut joint account. Interest is earned on balances up to £200,000.

Monzo: fine if you already bank together on Monzo

Monzo lets you open Instant Access Savings Pots inside a joint account. The base rate is 2.75% AER variable, and Monzo advertises up to 3.50% AER for joint pots where both of you have a paid Monzo plan. If you are on different plans, the lower one sets the rate, the same principle as Revolut.

There is no minimum deposit, you can hold up to £1,000,000 in a pot, and withdrawals land in the joint account straight away (Monzo may run extra security checks on large transfers). Either of you can close the pot, which sends the money back to the joint account. You can also lock a pot until a date, which some couples use to stop either person dipping into a house deposit.

Monzo’s joint account needs each of you to have a personal Monzo current account first. If you do not already bank with Monzo, Starling gives a better rate for less set-up. Our Monzo paid plans breakdown works through whether a plan pays for itself through the savings rate alone.

What about savings-only apps?

Chip, Plum and Moneybox are where many people start saving, but we found no joint savings product on their sites: they are set up around one account holder. If one of you saves in Chip and the other in Plum, that is two individual pots, each owned by one person, and either can withdraw only their own money.

High-street banks do offer joint savings accounts that you can manage in their apps, NatWest among them. If the three app-first options do not suit, compare those too, but check that both of you can see and move the money in the app, not just the person who opened it.

How much is protected in a joint savings account

Since 1 December 2025 the Financial Services Compensation Scheme protects eligible deposits up to £120,000 per person, per banking licence. A joint account is treated as split equally between the holders, so a couple is protected up to £240,000 at one bank. The FSCS deposit protection page explains the rules.

Two details to watch:

  1. The limit is per licence, not per app. Revolut’s joint savings money sits with ClearBank, and the £120,000 per-person limit applies across everything you hold with ClearBank, including any other app that uses it behind the scenes.
  2. Your personal and joint money add together. If you each have £100,000 in personal savings at Starling and £100,000 in a Starling joint saver, each of you has £150,000 at Starling, which is over the limit.

Tax on joint savings interest

HMRC normally treats interest on a joint account held by a married couple or civil partners as split 50:50. Each person’s half counts against their own Personal Savings Allowance (£1,000 for basic-rate taxpayers, £500 for higher-rate, nothing for additional-rate). If the money really belongs to you in unequal shares, you can declare that to HMRC on Form 17. For unmarried couples, interest is taxed according to who actually owns the money. Our page on tax on savings app interest covers how HMRC finds out and when you need to tell them.

Joint savings vs a shared pot vs a joint current account

These three get confused:

  • A joint savings account (Starling Joint Easy Saver, Revolut Joint Instant Access Savings, Monzo joint pot) is owned by both of you, earns interest, and either of you can take money out.
  • A joint current account is for paying bills and spending together. Most pay no interest on the balance. You need one to get any of the three savings products above. Our best joint account comparison covers the current accounts themselves.
  • Saving separately towards a shared goal (two personal pots) keeps each person’s money legally theirs. That suits couples who are not ready to share ownership, or where one person contributes far more.

One point couples miss: either holder on a joint account can usually withdraw the whole balance without the other’s agreement. If that worries you, a Monzo locked pot, or keeping deposits in your own names, gives more protection.

Which to pick

  • Neither of you pays for a banking plan: Starling Joint Easy Saver, but diarise the six-month mark and compare again when the rate drops to 2.50%.
  • You both already pay for Revolut Metal or Ultra: Revolut’s joint savings, at 3.4% or 4% with no bonus cliff.
  • You both already bank on Monzo with a paid plan: a Monzo joint pot at up to 3.50%, with the option of locking it.
  • Saving more than £240,000 together: split it across banking licences so every pound is FSCS-protected.

Check the current rate in each provider’s app before you move money, because all three rates are variable.

Frequently asked questions

Which app has the best joint savings account in the UK? On rates checked on 13 October 2026, Starling’s Joint Easy Saver pays the most without a subscription, at 4.00% AER on up to £25,000 for six months, then 2.50%. Revolut pays up to 4% AER with no time limit, but only if both of you are on its Ultra plan.

Can two people share a savings account on Monzo? Yes. Monzo joint account holders can open a Joint Instant Access Savings Pot paying from 2.75% AER, or up to 3.50% AER if you both have a paid Monzo plan. You each need a personal Monzo account before you can open the joint account.

How much of a joint savings account is FSCS protected? Up to £120,000 per person per banking licence, so £240,000 for a joint account held by two people, provided neither of you has other money at the same bank taking you over your share.

Do both people need a paid plan for the higher Revolut or Monzo rate? Yes. Both apps pay joint savings interest at the rate of the lower of your two plans, so one person upgrading does nothing on its own.

Can I open a joint savings account without a joint current account? Not with Starling, Revolut or Monzo: each one requires its own joint current account first. Savings-only apps such as Chip and Plum do not offer joint savings, so the alternative is a high-street bank’s joint savings account.

Who pays tax on interest from a joint savings account? For married couples and civil partners, HMRC splits the interest 50:50 unless you declare unequal ownership on Form 17. Each person’s half counts against their own Personal Savings Allowance.
